Kelly's Korner: Spring Landscaping Tips to Protect Your Pets

Spring is on the way! Feeling the warmer weather and desire to be outside will get us out in our yards and gardens before you know it. For those of us who are pet owners, creating a pet-friendly landscape is something to keep in mind if your furry friends spend time with you in the yards and gardens.

Here are a few things to be mindful about to protect your pets!

Choose Pet Safe Plants

Create a Pet-Friendly Path

Design clear pathways for your pet to follow. Use materials like gravel, mulch, or stepping stones to define the path and prevent the trampling of delicate plants.

Note: Cocoa Bean mulch is toxic for dogs!

Provide and Shade and Water Stations

• Dogs and Cats need a cool spot to rest during hot days. Plant trees or install shade structures to create shaded areas in your yard.
• Set up water stations with fresh water to keep your pets hydrated.
• Install a Water Feature:
• Dogs love water! Consider adding a small pond, or a shallow pool where your pet can splash around and stay cool and hydrated.

Use Pet Safe Fertilizers and Pesticides

When maintaining your yard, choose pet-safe products. Avoid chemicals that could harm your furry friend if ingested or absorbed through their paws. There are options for pet-safe products on Amazon.

Create Play Zones

Dogs love to run and play. Designate an area for playtime, with toys and obstacles for exercise.

Cats enjoy climbing and exploring. Install cat-friendly structures like scratching posts or elevated platforms.
