Kelly's Korner: The BEST Selection Of Plants For Your Yard

At Minnesota Landscapes, we put a lot of thought into the plants, shrubs, and trees we recommend for our designs. Take a look a some of our favorites for Minnesota's challenging climate.

When designing a landscape, a lot of thought goes into the plant, shrub, and tree selection.  When presenting the design, I talk clients through why I make a certain selection.  There are a selection of plants that Minnesota Landscapes uses on a regular basis.  Here are a few of them:

Boxwood: Boxwood is a broadleaf evergreen shrub. It is widely used in landscaping for its dense foliage, year‑round greenery, and ability to be shaped into hedges or topiaries.  I love them because they are a lovely evergreen that gives year-round structure and color.  They’ve been used in gardens worldwide for hundreds of years.

Astilbe:  A low maintenance and deer resistant perennial. They have long-blooming, plume-like flowers in soft shades of white, pink, purple, and red, and the flowers are held on tall, stiff stalks above the airy foliage.  Most varities can grow in Full Sun to Full Shade.  They brighten shady gardens with midsummer color.  Butterflies are fans as well.  A particular favorite is Delft Lace, because of the delicate peach-pink flowers on blue-green foliage with vibrant red new growth.

Allium:  Alliums are prized for architectural structure in garden beds, deer and rabbit resistance (a huge plus in Minnesota), and long-lasting blooms and seed heads.

Catmint (Nepeta): A perennial ornamental herb from the mint family, known for attracting pollinators and deterring insects. These plants have gray-green foliage that gives off a mild fragrance and a delicate, lacy look. Topped with spikes of white, pink, or lavender-blue flowers, they are easy to grow in a variety of climates.  It blooms from early summer, continuing throughout the season. Its quick growth and resistance to deer make it ideal for planting from spring to early fall.
